About Our Yoga: The Jayadeva Yoga Schools Experience

Jayadeva Yoga Schools, formerly Mama Nirvana's New Yoga, is a place to come recharge yourself on all levels, with people who help and support you in an environment where you can relax, learn and grow.


Quality and Experience Counts

All of our instructors have a minimum of 200 hours of Yoga Teacher Training and have completed a real-world teaching practicum. Some have much more training and experience. All are trained in anatomy, teaching methods and ethics. They are able to improvise and instantly adapt to the needs of their students. They are skilled yoga practitioners whose passion is to share their love of yoga with you. They are engaging presenters who make yoga fun.

When you come to Jayadeva Yoga Schools, you are treated as an honored guest in our "yoga home." You will notice many personal touches: You will be greeted personally by your instructor; there are plenty of spacious bathrooms; our studios have excellent modern central heating and air conditioning; you will find abundant props and cushions available to enhance your comfort; after your first class your instructor will check in with you to answer any questions you may have.

This is a tough question for us to answer. Yoga is a living system and as such it is evolving. Our way of life is changing fast, and our human family is experiencing what some call "upheavals" and what others call "an evolution of consciousness." Every day that we teach yoga we connect with our students and respond spontaneously to their needs. We have been doing this for years and years.

Yes indeed we have decades of study with teachers of yoga, movement, meditation, martial arts, and more. Some are famous; many are not. Some were or are true masters who showed us the heights of our own potential. All have blessed us with their brilliance and given us our own solid foundation.

When a teacher gives full attention to a discipline, seeks to master it, seeks to teach it as effectively as possible, and applies their full creative energy to this task, inspiration occurs. Information, direction, knowledge come directly to the mind. The teacher and their style become one. Their teaching becomes an outer reflection of that individual's Inner Being. At that point, the style is evolving right along with the teacher it is flowing through and people it serves. It defies being limited by names and descriptions. It cannot be copied by another. What we offer is a response to a present need and is therefore living, real and ever-changing.

Class Descriptions

 

Yoga

Postures and deep relaxation are always included. Postures are held longer and there maybe pauses between postures. May include some vinyasa sequences. May also include special instructions on yoga breathing and meditation.
Use of props: Moderate to high
Technical instruction offered: Moderate to high
Sweat Factor: Low to moderate
Flexibility benefit: High
Relaxation: High
Strength benefit: Moderate to high
Pacing: Slow and deliberate to moderate
(Beginner level yoga is appropriate for individuals who have health problems, have minor injuries or who are very stiff.)

Vinyasa

Postures linked in a choreographed sequence. Breath is coordinated with movement to a high degree.
Use of props: Low to Moderate
Technical assistance offered: Moderate
Sweat Factor: High
Flexibility benefit: High
Relaxation: low
Strength benefit: High
Pacing: Moderate to fast.
(This class is not appropriate for individuals with serious health problems, who have painful injuries or who are extremely stiff.)

Gentle/Restorative

Suitable for all levels. These classes focus on the healing and rejuvenating qualities of yoga posture practices. To encourage the client health and well being in a supportive, nurturing, non-threatening environment. The nature of these classes is quite passive, non-vigorous, introspective application of yoga asanas.

Pilates

Pilates mat class, including exercises to maximize strength and flexibility of the core.
Use of Props: Low to moderate
Technical instruction offered: Moderate
Sweat factor: medium to High
Flexibility benefit: moderate
Relaxation: Low
Strength benefit: High
Pacing: Fast
(This class is appropriate for individuals with most types of injuries. Contact the studio via phone or email if you have serious injuries.)

Yoga/Pilates Fusion

Yoga postures alternate with pilates exercises. Yoga breathing and pilates breathing are both taught. Focus is always on form and alignment. This class builds strength and stability of the spine, abdomen and pelvis.

Sweat factor: Low to moderate
Flexibility benefit: moderate to high
Relaxation: Moderate to high
Strength benefit: High
Pacing: Slow to moderate

Class Levels

Beginners (B)

(Also called Level 1) This level consists of fundamental techniques appropriate for most people with little or no experience. Students perform basic warm-ups, postures, and exercises. Correct breathing and relaxation techniques are also introduced. Beginners and individuals with injuries and physical limitations should start at beginner level.

Advanced Beginners (AB)

(Also called level 2) This level offers increased challenges to those who have become comfortable with beginner's level material. Students practice holding postures longer to build greater strength and stamina. Alignment and form are studied in more depth at this level. 6 months minimum experience required. Must be comfortable and familiar with sun salutes, standing and seated poses.

Intermediate (INT)

(Also known as level 3) Intermediate level refers to individuals with substantial yoga experience who are already knowledgeable of and comfortable with a large variety of standing postures and floor postures. These individuals are already strong and flexible. Includes highly challenging postures including inversions, backward bends and arm balances. Alignment is subtle and refined.

Beginners / Advanced Beginners (B/AB)

(Also known as level 1&2) This class is appropriate for those at advanced beginner level, while special instructions are offered for beginners as needed.

Advanced Beginners / Intermediate (AB/INT)

(Also known as level 2&3) This class can accommodate individuals at advanced beginner level while challenging those people with substantial yoga experience who are already strong and flexible.

All Levels (ALL)

All levels are welcome.
